It's basically a letter written from King Solomon who was one of the greatest kings ever. He basically built his own kingdom with whatever he wanted because he had that authority and money. He searched and searched for things to fulfill him and he was never fulfilled until he realized that fulfillment comes from above, not things of this earth.
My goal is to make this post pretty short. Sometimes I feel like I might make my posts way too long.
By now, I think I have read through the book of Ecclesiastes about 5 times. Every time I read through it I find smarting new that I have never seen, or I get different interpretations of what certain verses mean.
A verse from Ecclesiastes 6 jumped off of the page this evening when I was reading through it and I believed that I could write about it and encourage you with it.
"Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the appetite: this also is vanity and a striving after wind." (Ecclesiastes 6:9)
Think about that verse, what does it mean to you?
I think that sometimes we view hunger and appetite more importantly than what we see. I am sure there have been times in your life when you are so hungry that you make rash decisions and you probably eat things that you shouldn't be eating. It's like when you go into the grocery store before you have eaten. Everything on the shelf looks good and you want to buy everything that you see because you are so hungry. So what ends up happening is that you spend way more money than you want to and you have an appetite for so many different things.
Better is the sight of the eyes. When you have your eyes set on something, you have a vision. Most of the time it's not very clear. Other times, it can be very clear. Satan tries to distract you by making you take your eyes off of the prize. The sight of your eyes should be straightforward, not side to side.
What does vanity mean?
Vanity - excessive pride in or admiration of one's own appearance or achievements
When your appetite wanders, you are excessive about yourself and your own appearance and achievements. That is not what you want. You can set your eyes on one thing and have an appetite for many things.
Set your eyes on Christ, that is where your true and only real fulfillment will come from. I can testify to that with all my heart. I spent time with my girlfriend today, I worked out, worked and made money, and spent time in the word. All amazing things but time in the word trumps all of those over and over again because that is what's most important. When your sight is set on Christ, you grow, you learn than you carry that over to your life, family, marriage (girlfriend), relationships, work, etc.
I encourage you to remember that having a vision is better and more fulfilling than filling your appetite.
I hope and pray this was encouraging and made sense to you in some sort of way.
